With just 12 months remaining on his contract, Thomas Müller’s Bayern Munich future is unclear.
Müller, who made his professional debut in the 2008/09 season, has only ever played for Bayern Munich. Müller is focussed on recovering from a hip injury, and the Rekordmeister are planning contract discussions in the Autumn. But according to Kicker, it can’t be ruled out that this could be his last season at the club.
What next for Thomas Müller?
Müller (33) has played 666 games across all competitions for Bayern Munich, scoring 235 goals and creating a further 256. Known for his football IQ, and perhaps not his technical ability, Müller always been a player to watch over the years. With 12 Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues and six German cups, Müller is one of the most decorated players in German football. Ever-present at Bayern Munich, it would be odd to see Müller play elsewhere.
But that could be a possibility in 2024. At 33, Müller has already accepted that he won’t be a key player for Bayern Munich under Thomas Tuchel with Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry all competing to start in Bayern’s attack, which should be strengthened with the signing of Harry Kane.
If Müller does leave Bayern Munich in 2024, there’s a few possibilities. One of those is obviously Saudi Arabia, who have seen an influx of high profile foreign players. Another option is the MLS, where Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets have all flocked to this summer.
Although unlikely, another option for Müller would be retirement. It’s not odd to see German players retire at a younger age. André Schürrle (32) retired in 2020, Lars Bender (34) and Sven Bender (34) both retired at Bayer Leverkusen in 2021 and just this season, Jonas Hector (33), who has only played professionally for Cologne, retired this summer after his contract at the club expired.
